Greetings, CommUNITY!

People often ask why I decided to open a coffeehouse. Well the answer is simple… I wanted to create an inclusively creative space for community to gather that paid homage to the history of Indiana Avenue, and Black culture. I chose a coffeehouse because of its unique ability to bring folx together.  Coffee is a connector, a conversation starter, a culture builder and in our case a commUNITY organizer. I intentionally created this space to give voice and visibility to people in the margins.

This social enterprise is about more than just delicious coffee and good vibes. COFFEE, COMMUNITY and CULTURE are at the center of The Avenue’s ethos. One of our goals is to use the profits from the coffeehouse to help other Black entrepreneurs bring their visions and dreams to life.

I’m proud to be the owner of the first Black owned specialty coffeehouse in Indianapolis. I endeavor to become a leader in the specialty coffee movement while uplifting Black culture, and assisting in the quest to breathe Black life back into the Indiana Avenue Historic District. My ultimate goal is to have a brick and mortar location on Indiana Avenue. A space that continues to pay homage to the rich history of The Avenue, and support local  Black entrepreneurs.

Let's exchange JOY. I can't wait to see you at The Avenue!

Peace, Love & Equity,

A Little About The Space

The vision for The Avenue Coffeehouse was inspired by the rich history and culture of Historical Indiana Avenue in Indianapolis, IN.

Indiana Avenue was the epicenter of Black culture and commerce in Indianapolis from the 1860’s to the 1970’s. “The Avenue” was to Indiana what Harlem is to New York. On the Avenue, people could find Black churches, doctors, lawyers, cafes, restaurants, jazz clubs and other Black owned establishments.

Indiana Avenue was home to the headquarters of Madam CJ Walker’s empire and the Ruth McArthur Music Conservatory. In the late 1950’s things started to change and Black residents and business owners were pushed out. The once thriving and viable community was eventually erased.
